The Nature focus area within the Healthy Environment theme is how we deliver nature positive outcomes now and in the future.
Protecting the natural environment is fundamental to Anglo American’s long-term success. As custodians of the land and ecosystems around our operations, we recognise that society increasingly expects responsible resource development that safeguards nature while delivering value. Our approach focuses on reducing our environmental footprint and contributing to positive outcomes for ecosystems, host communities, and stakeholders across the mining lifecycle.
Grounded in global commitments to halt and reverse nature loss, Anglo American is working to embed nature-positive thinking into how we plan, operate, and close our assets. This approach supports the delivery of our Sustainability Strategy and reflects our ambition to integrate nature-based solutions and innovation into the way we develop and operate our business.
Anglo American’s approach to nature is built on the recognition that healthy ecosystems underpin resilient communities, stable supply chains, and long-term business value. We operate in diverse and often sensitive environments, and we take responsibility for managing our impacts while actively contributing to the protection and recovery of nature.
Our approach to nature is based on the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and global societal goal to ‘halt and reverse nature loss by 2030 on a 2020 baseline and achieve full recovery by 2050’. These commitments guide how we identify, assess, and manage our impacts and dependencies on nature, and how we prioritise action across our portfolio.

At the core of our approach is the mitigation hierarchy. We seek first to avoid impacts on biodiversity and ecosystems wherever possible, then minimise and restore where impacts cannot be avoided, and finally offset residual impacts where appropriate. This hierarchy is applied consistently across the mining lifecycle, from early exploration and project design through to operation, closure, and post-closure land use.
We aim to move beyond compliance to understand whether our actions are genuinely improving ecosystem condition, supporting biodiversity, and strengthening landscape resilience. Site-level Biodiversity Management Programmes are designed to be locally relevant, science-based, and informed by engagement with stakeholders, including Indigenous Peoples and local communities.
Recognising that many nature-related challenges extend beyond our operational boundaries, we engage in partnerships and landscape-scale initiatives to address cumulative impacts and shared risks. By working with governments, NGOs, industry peers, and local stakeholders, we aim to contribute to collective action that supports long-term ecosystem recovery.
Through this integrated and evolving approach, Anglo American is embedding nature into the way we operate, supporting our Sustainability Strategy, strengthening trust with stakeholders.
