Introduction

Our Thriving Communities theme is focused on how we act as a catalyst to make meaningful, enduring contributions to the communities where we operate.

We have a strong record of making a lasting, positive contribution to the regions in which we operate. We are building on this track record through helping to unlock long-term economic growth and resilience that improves livelihoods in host communities.

We aim to drive systemic and long-term gains through our education goals. We believe that education is essential to address the triple evils of poverty, inequality and unemployment because it increases students’ abilities to access economic and employment opportunities while preparing them with the skills for the future.

We are committed to supporting local community health owing to its direct impact on both our workforce and their families. By investing in local health capabilities and preventative healthcare measures, we can help secure a more stable and supportive operational environment and help foster positive relationships with local stakeholders.

What are the focus areas for Thriving Communities?

Within the Thriving Communities theme, the focus areas are Livelihoods, Education and Health.

By investing in livelihoods, education and health, we help build more resilient communities and leave behind a longer-term positive legacy, which in turn strengthens our social licence to operate.

This approach also drives business value by reducing operational risks, lowering longer-term closure and rehabilitation liabilities, and enhancing trust with stakeholders, supporting access to new resources and developing our existing assets through access to permits.

It supports our ability to attract and retain talent in communities where we operate, fosters innovation through local partnerships, and positions us as a partner of choice.

Impact Finance Network

The Impact Finance Network (IFN) is Anglo American’s platform dedicated to supporting economic diversification and livelihoods by unlocking private capital for growth-focused small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Operating across Africa and Latin America, the IFN helps local businesses overcome barriers to investment, enabling them to scale and deliver positive social and environmental impact.
