Introduction

The Climate focus area within the Healthy Environment theme is how we produce carbon neutral metals and minerals that the world needs by 2040.

Increasing global temperatures are leading to more frequent and more severe weather events across the world. This continually evolving backdrop reinforces the importance of businesses such as Anglo American continuing to take action to reduce emissions, increase operational resilience, and produce the metals and minerals that will help mitigate global emissions. Doing so is right for the long-term sustainability of our business, and the right thing for society. We see this as part of living our Purpose – re-imagining mining to improve people’s lives.

Our approach

Climate change is a defining challenge of our time. Our commitment to being part of the solution includes producing the metals and minerals a low carbon world needs, reducing our own greenhouse gas emissions and supporting our value chain to do the same.

Our portfolio of world-class assets plays a central role in this effort, delivering the metals and minerals essential to global decarbonisation. In addition, our approach to operating the portfolio ensures that we are making the business resilient to the effects of climate change, working to mitigate our emissions footprint, and helping to secure our licence to operate through a responsible approach to mining.

This all forms part of our strategy to being part of the solution to tackling the challenge of climate change and is a key element of our contribution towards a just transition where we operate.

Ambition

Produce carbon neutral metals and minerals that the world needs by 2040.*

* Excluding Kumba Iron Ore due to the currently stated life of mine for its assets

Targets

  • Reduce operational (Scope 1 and Scope 2) emissions by 30% by 2030 (vs. 2020)
  • Support a Paris-aligned trajectory for the steel industry: targeting an average emissions intensity of 1.3 tCO₂e per tonne of crude steel made from our iron ore by 2040.*

* Weighted average emissions intensity of 2.2 tCO₂e per tonne of crude steel produced with Anglo American’s sold iron ore in 2020, compared to global average of 2.8 tCO₂e per tonne of crude steel in 2020.
