Introduction

The Livelihoods focus area within the Thriving Communities theme is how we improve local economic opportunities and diversification.

We have a strong record of making a lasting, positive contribution to the regions in which we operate. We are building on this track record through helping to unlock long-term economic growth and resilience that improves livelihoods in host communities.

To create diversified economic opportunities that make a lasting impact to livelihoods, we are working to deliver sustainable, collaborative and inclusive ways of supporting communities, applying a partnership-focused development approach that catalyses long-term systemic change with and within our operating regions.

We continue to invest in key programmes – agriculture development, youth employability, local business development initiatives, such as Zimele in South Africa and Emerge in Chile, and our Impact Finance Network (IFN), which provides technical assistance to growth-focused SMEs and helps them to secure third-party funding.

Our approach

We are focused on supporting lasting, inclusive jobs that meet real community needs, especially for women and young people who often face the greatest barriers to opportunity.

To achieve our targets, we are helping local economies to diversify and build long-term resilience – reducing the dependency on mining. To deliver this, we are forming strategic partnerships and pioneering innovative, cost-effective models for delivery and funding.

We have made significant progress to date. Since 2018, we have supported 157,199 jobs in total. For our simplified portfolio, that figure now stands at 93,246 (by the end of 2024).
