Aligned to our Purpose to re-imagine mining to improve people's lives, our Responsible Sourcing programme defines minimum sustainability requirements and decent work principles required by suppliers to Anglo American.

We expect suppliers to meet all applicable laws – and share our commitment to improve people’s lives, society and our environment.

Within our business, the commitment to responsible sourcing prioritises ethical decision making when purchasing goods and services.

It compliments ongoing efforts aimed at combatting Modern Slavery, promoting principles of decent work and ensuring the protection of fundamental Human Rights for every person impacted through supply chain activities.

Suppliers are a critical part of any business and includes providers of goods and services, all agents, contractors, consultants and intermediaries.

All suppliers are expected to:

  • Protect health and safety
  • Protect our environment
  • Respect labour and human rights
  • Contribute to thriving communities
  • Conduct business fairly and with integrity

We are committed to working with our suppliers – and prospective suppliers - to increase the awareness of our business requirements including Responsible Sourcing.

Supplier requirements

At minimum, suppliers are expected to comply with all relevant laws and aim towards decent work principles. This prioritises the respect and protection of worker rights, safe working spaces and equality of opportunity and treatment for workers of all genders.

To guide suppliers on these requirements, our Responsible Sourcing Standard for Suppliers is the equivalent of a ‘Supplier Code of Conduct’ outlining our minimum expectations. Participation in our responsible sourcing programme is a mandatory requirement for suppliers and is embedded in our supplier management processes and contracting arrangements.

In summary, all suppliers are required to:

  1. Commit to Responsible Business Practice
Every supplier to our business is required to comply with relevant laws and commit to Responsible Sourcing requirements as a pre-condition to supply.

  2. Complete a Self-Assessment
Suppliers are to complete a self-assessment questionnaire (SAQ), including making updates to the information provided. The SAQ is typically required during supplier registration, qualification, updates and sourcing events.

  3. Provide evidence of a Third Party Assessment
Suppliers may be required to provide evidence of previously conducted responsible sourcing assessments, or be requested to conduct a new, third party assessment.

  4. Manage your risk
Where Responsible Sourcing risk has been identified - including any breaches to the Standard - suppliers are required to inform Anglo American, develop corrective action plans with realistic timelines to address them and provide feedback on progress.
