Work for Anglo American and you’ll be working for a company with a clear purpose: to re-imagine mining to improve people’s lives.
Our Purpose runs through everything we do, in every part of the business. It informs how we treat and interact with our colleagues, our communities, our shareholders and other stakeholders.
We've been a leader in our industry for more than a century. Now, our Purpose fuels our ambition to keep leading the change for the next 100 years.
Through FutureSmart MiningTM, our innovation-led pathway to sustainable mining, we’re developing technologies that mean we can keep producing the metals and minerals we all need to transition to a cleaner, greener, more electrified world, while reducing our own environmental footprint.
The technologies we’ve developed are all designed with the safety of our people in mind. Keeping our people safe and well is our priority, always, and our safety is our most important value.
Care and Respect, another of the values that underpin our Purpose, was behind the launch of our WeCare programme, introduced in 2020 in response to the Covid-19 pandemic that shook the world. The programme protected the lives and livelihoods of our 95,000 employees, their families, and our host communities.
None of what we do is possible without the people who make up our high-performing teams. And, for them, living up to our Purpose means creating a supportive environment and investing in their development to help them thrive and reach their full potential.
We want to lead our industry in transforming the very nature of mining.
Already our innovative FutureSmart MiningTM technologies, such as bulk ore sorting (BOS) and coarse particle recovery (CPR), are changing the way minerals are processed, and early in 2021, our Unki platinum mine in Zimbabwe became the first mine in the business, and the first in Africa, to be successfully assessed against the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance’s (IRMA) comprehensive mining standard.
Under the Trusted Corporate Leader pillar of our Sustainable Mining Plan, we’ve made a commitment to assure all our operations against a recognised, responsible mining standard by 2025, another clear demonstration of our drive to lead the change in mining and live up to our Purpose.
Our Purpose is to re-imagine mining to improve people’s lives and that includes the people living in the communities around our operations.
These communities are the places our people call home. They’re our closest neighbours, stewards of the land entrusted to us – and the reason that Thriving Communities is one of the three “pillars” of our Sustainable Mining.
Under that heading, we’ve set ourselves some ambitious targets and goals, designed to improve the education, health and wellbeing, and livelihoods of the people who give us the license to operate in their backyard.
The work we do as an organisation is complemented by the wonderful work that’s done through Ambassadors for Good.
Ambassadors for Good is our skills-based volunteering programme, which gives our people the chance to donate their time and personal and professional skills to run projects that will benefit their local community, backed by funding from the Anglo American Foundation.
Our Purpose also applies to our own people and we aim to improve life for them by making sure they work in an environment that is welcoming, inclusive, and fair-minded, regardless of their background.
Our aim is underpinned by our Everyone inclusion and diversity (I&D) strategy. The strategy incorporates the work we’re doing to end the male dominance of our industry, our campaigns to combat bullying, gender-based and domestic violence and it’s supported by the appropriate workplace policies, systems, and practices that we have in place across the company.
This year, we have been recognised as a Top Employer by Top Employers Institute. Top Employers is a global certification programme that provides an opportunity for organisations to benchmark their people practices and workplace environment against global best practice.
To make sure that happens, we have some of the most rigorous safety standards in the industry in place across our business. And we’re always investing in new ways and new technologies to make mining safer and keep people from harm.
We want our people to be healthy, happy, engaged and fulfilled in work and in life. To help them do that, we run a range of programmes, campaigns, and initiatives to create a healthy working environment and encourage healthy lifestyles.
Our belief is that no one should be injured or contract illness while they’re at work, which is why we take occupational health so seriously.
Your safety is our priority, always. We want every one of our people to return home safely, every day.
Our approach to it is guided by three principles:
And these principles are all backed up with a range of measures and processes - taking care of our people is at the heart of what we do.
We are in the process of undertaking a comprehensive engagement process with all our stakeholders about our intent. This is so we can tailor our approach in each country, including ensuring what we do is lawful. Once this is complete, we will look to implement the policy. There may be differences in how and when it is implemented due to local context and legal requirements.
