The Nature focus area within the Healthy Environment theme is how we deliver nature positive outcomes now and in the future.
Protecting our natural environment is material to us and is increasingly expected by our stakeholders and society.
As custodians of the land and ecosystems around our operations, we seek to improve the footprint of our operations and direct our efforts towards contributing to nature-positive outcomes for host communities and our wide range of stakeholders.
Our approach to nature-positive outcomes is based on the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and global societal goal to 'halt and reverse nature loss by 2030 on a 2020 baseline and achieve full recovery by 2050'.
By prioritising nature positive outcomes, we support the delivery of our Sustainability Strategy commitments and how we transform the way we operate and develop mining operations to integrate nature-based solutions and innovative technologies throughout the mining lifecycle.
We aim to deliver nature-positive outcomes by avoiding, reducing, or offsetting environmental impacts, while restoring and rehabilitating ecosystems throughout an asset’s lifecycle. Progress is tracked using Quality Habitat Hectares (QHH) against a 2018 baseline.
Our approach to nature is guided by ICMM Nature Position Statement, the Global Biodiversity Framework, and broader global and regional efforts to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030 and drive recovery by 2050.
The Quality Habitat Hectares (QHH) approach, developed in collaboration with Fauna and Flora, enables us to measure progress on the pathway towards Net Positive Impact (NPI) on biodiversity. Progress against each site’s NPI pathway will be assessed and independently validated by one of our international conservation agency partners every three years.
Deliver nature positive outcomes now and in the future.
Maintain a continuous, validated pathway to Net Positive Impact on biodiversity throughout the life of our assets.
