Our Los Bronces copper mine in Chile is situated near the source of the Olivares and Colorado Rivers in the Santiago Metropolitan Region.
In 2021 we chose to voluntarily exclude 8,400 hectares of our mining concession from future development due to its high ecological value, including glaciers, wetlands, and native Andean habitats.
Formally committing this land to conservation, recognising its importance for water regulation, climate resilience, and ecosystem connectivity, we applied the avoidance principle at landscape scale.
This decision directly enabled the creation of the Santiago Glaciers National Park by the National Assets Ministry in August 2023, securing permanent protection for the area.
By foregoing access to this sensitive land, we demonstrated how the avoidance principle can deliver meaningful conservation outcomes, supporting both national priorities and long-term nature protection.
