The Our people focus area within the Trusted Corporate Leader theme is how we ensure we are a truly inclusive workplace, where every colleague feels safe, valued and supported to thrive.
Our people – our employees and contractors – are the driving force behind everything we do. We’re unwavering in our commitment to protect their safety, health and wellbeing, so everyone returns home safe and well. But our responsibility doesn’t stop there.
We’re focused on fostering a culture that is guided by our Purpose – one in which our employees feel safe, both physically and psychologically, valued for who they are and the work they do, and are empowered and accountable to make a difference. We’re focused on building an inclusive, empowering environment where everyone feels valued and supported to reach their full potential, and can bring their whole selves to work.
To help every individual thrive, the Our people focus area brings together key priorities of safety, health and wellbeing, performance, leadership and a Centre of Excellence comprising culture, I&D, talent and learning. When our people have the support and environment they need to succeed, they bring our Purpose to life and live our Values every day. That’s how we become a place where exceptional talent chooses to join our company, stay and grow.
We have made continued progress in improving safety, with our Total Recordable Injury Frequency Rate (TRIFR) showing a sustained downward trend - falling from 3.17 in 2017 to a record low of 1.57 in 2024, and further improving to 1.20 in 2025 H1 - though we recognise there is still more to do to ensure every one of us returns home safely, every day.
We’re strengthening our data systems to drive smarter health decisions, and advancing the sophistication of our exposure controls with engineering innovations, optimised equipment selection, and maintenance programmes to reduce risk and prevent harm before it happens.
Our culture is a key driver of performance and long-term value. We’re helping leaders bring our Values to life and create teams where people feel empowered, take ownership, and focus on delivering value in a cost-conscious way. We’re strengthening clarity and transparency in how we work, creating deeper connections across teams and geographies.
Our inclusion and diversity ambition is delivered through a clear and holistic strategy that powers our culture vision. We are embedding inclusion at the heart of how we lead, how we work, and how we grow our business. We are enabling inclusive workplaces where every colleague feels empowered to thrive, contribute and grow.
We’re strengthening our internal talent pipelines with a focus on underrepresented groups and critical future skills, while building external pipelines to complement them. Our strategy includes global mentoring, career development, coaching, and programmes for early talent and future leaders, all aimed at building a strong, diverse succession pipeline, retaining talent and empowering people to thrive.
Finally, we’ve transformed how learning is designed and delivered, using human-centred design and our own learning model to move from knowledge-sharing to real-world skill application.
In the UK, we have followed the Living Wage Foundation’s real Living Wage rate since 2014. Now with maturity and availability of Living Wage reference values for all the countries in which we have a presence, we have been able to conduct an in-depth assessment to understand our overall position regarding the Living Wage and our global employee workforce – in managed operations, excluding contractors, apprentices and interns.
With that in mind, we have established the following commitments:
Anglo American has been in partnership with the Fair Wage Network (FWN) since March 2021. The FWN is a reputable organisation that has developed an online database that covers Living Wage reference values for every country in the world and is considered experts in this field. We are in the process of exploring the accreditation process with the FWN with a view to formalising our status as a committed Living Wage employer.
Be a truly inclusive workplace, where every colleague feels safe, valued and supported to thrive.
We prioritise safety through a “Zero Mindset” approach, aiming for zero harm, enforcing non-negotiable standards, empowering employees, and using technology to reduce risks and prevent incidents.
