Carbon neutral by 2040

Achieving our target of carbon neutrality across our operations remains a complex, multi-dimensional challenge. However, we understand better than ever each of the elements required to decarbonise our operations.

We have identified the pathways to achieve carbon neutrality at our sites by 2040, and we continue to make progress on reducing the greenhouse gas emissions that result from our mining activities.

2024 Scope 1 emissions
6.7 Mt CO2e
2023: 7.5 Mt CO2e
2024 Scope 2 emissions
4.9 Mt CO2e
2023: 5.0 Mt CO2e

Our Scopes 1 and 2 targets:

30% reduction
by 2030, against a 2016 baseline
Carbon neutral
by 2040

Our pathway to carbon neutrality by 2040

Compared with 2019, when our emissions peaked, we have delivered a 31% reduction in our total Scope 1 and 2 emissions (2019: 16.8 Mt CO2e) and a 26% reduction in our emissions intensity.

Year-on-year improvements in the management of methane in our steelmaking coal business have made the largest contribution to this reduction in emissions from the 2019 peak. Completing the roll-out of renewable energy in South America in 2023 was also a significant milestone.
