Across Anglo American’s Kumba Iron Ore business, colleagues recently stood together in silence against gender-based violence, recognising a deeply concerning reality that continues to affect far too many individuals, families and communities across South Africa.

The moment was marked by colleagues wearing black and signing a pledge against gender-based violence. These acts of solidarity carry important meaning, demonstrating support for those who have been affected and reinforcing a collective commitment to change. Yet their significance extends beyond the moment itself. Real progress depends on the actions that follow.

Too many people continue to experience violence, abuse and fear in the very places where they should feel safest. Behind every incident is a person whose dignity has been violated, a family whose lives have been impacted and a community left to carry the consequences. Gender-based violence is not only a matter of personal safety. It is a challenge that affects the well-being, stability and future of society as a whole.

Anglo American strives to foster an environment where people feel safe, respected and valued, where dignity is protected and harmful behaviour is neither ignored nor normalised.

This commitment reaches far beyond our operations. It is a responsibility we carry into our homes, our families and the communities where we live and work. Creating environments where people feel empowered to speak up, where respect is expected and where dignity is upheld requires ongoing effort from all of us.

As colleagues gathered to stand together against gender-based violence, the message was clear: solidarity is important, but lasting change depends on collective action. It lies in the behaviours we challenge, the attitudes we refuse to accept and the choices we make every day to protect the dignity and safety of others.

We also stand with the families and loved ones of those whose lives have been impacted by violence. Our thoughts remain with all those affected, and we support efforts to ensure that perpetrators are held accountable.

Ending gender-based violence demands more than awareness. It requires individuals, organisations and communities to play an active role in creating a culture of respect, accountability and care.

Everyone can make a difference. What matters is how we choose to show, how we treat one another, how we respond when we witness harmful behaviour and how we work together to ensure that every person can live free from violence, fear and discrimination.

Because everyone’s dignity matters. And protecting it is a responsibility shared by us all.
