Look around you. The building you are sitting in. The train carrying commuters to work. The bridge connecting communities. The wind turbines generating clean energy. The power grids bringing electricity to our homes. What do they all have in common?

Steel.

It is so deeply embedded in our daily lives that we rarely stop to think about it. Yet steel is integral to our modern way of life, underpinning the infrastructure, industries and innovations that have transformed our world.

For generations, steel has helped shape the world we know today. And as the world evolves, its importance is only growing.

Simply put, modern life would look very different without steel.

Powering a lower-carbon future

Steel’s role is not limited to the world we have already built. It is also helping create the world we are building next.

The global transition to cleaner energy relies heavily on steel. Wind turbines, solar infrastructure, electricity networks and public transport systems all require significant quantities of the metal.

As countries invest in new infrastructure and expand renewable energy capacity, steel will remain a critical enabler of progress. In many ways, the future is being built with the same material that helped build the past.

And as the world moves towards a cleaner and more sustainable future, so too is the steelmaking industry.

The journey towards lower-carbon steelmaking begins with iron ore

As demand for infrastructure, urban development and energy solutions continues to grow, so too does the need for the raw materials that underpin them. But while steel is essential to economic progress and the transition to a low-carbon economy, primary steel production remains carbon intensive.

Iron ore – the raw material at the heart of steelmaking – will play a critical role in shaping a more sustainable future for the steel industry. High grade iron ore, particularly grades suitable for direct reduced iron, will be required to decarbonising the industry and is expected to see stronger demand growth and command higher prices than lower-quality ore.

Anglo American’s premium iron ore operations in Brazil and South Africa are key producers of high-quality iron ore suitable for lower-emission steelmaking technologies and applications. By supplying our customers with high-grade ore, much of it direct-charge material for blast furnace steelmaking, we are helping to improve steelmaking efficiency and reduce emissions intensity while providing a key ingredient for the steel needed to build a more sustainable future.
