Independent, scalable and sustainable development

Collaborative Regional Development (CRD) is our innovative partnership model to catalyse independent, scalable and sustainable economic development in regions around our operations – the objective being to improve lives by creating truly thriving communities that endure and prosper well beyond the life of the mine.

We partner with governments, communities, other private sector companies, academia, financial development institutions and NGOs through our CRD work. This approach provides comprehensive and scalable benefits for us – as members of the community who benefit from its prosperity – and our stakeholders.

Our approach

Establishing cross-sector partnerships with organisations from different sectors to work together on projects of mutual interest, share risks and combine resources and competencies to create maximum value.

Spatial and economic analysis

Rigorous spatial analysis to identify the social and economic development opportunities of greatest potential to inform the short, medium and long-term SED strategy.

Identifying opportunities

Testing out opportunities, including exploring market prospects, and local stakeholder views to determine their viability.

Planning and partnership development

Establish a regional backbone organisation that acts as the “partnership engine” in collaboration with government and other stakeholders.

Implementation

Combining the strengths of different sectors: business, government and civil society in a specific region to yield great public benefit.

Scaling

Collaborating with market leaders to manage, and co-fund and leverage funds to implement, at scale, jointly agreed projects.

Impact and evaluation

Utilising spatial analysis to identify social and economic development opportunities with the greatest potential in a region to inform the long-term socio-economic development strategy.

Recognising the challenges our host communities face

Society as a whole — including government, NGOs and business — must work together to address these issues comprehensively and in ways that can be accurately measured.

As an integral part of our Sustainable Mining Plan and in line with our vision and purpose, CRD addresses these needs by providing a partnership-based model designed to catalyse scalable and sustainable regional development in every geography where we have operations.

Our approach includes building CRD into our future mining operations at the earliest stages of planning.

Our current partnership programmes

To stimulate local economies, we promote local and inclusive procurement initiatives, enterprise and supplier development, and youth and workforce development. These programmes create a strong platform for job creation within and outside the mining value chain.
