Feeding more people without harming the planet, is one of the defining challenges of the 21st century. Our Crop Nutrients business will contribute to a more sustainable way of feeding the world by developing innovative natural mineral polyhalite crop nutrition products from the Woodsmith Mine in North Yorkshire.
By 2050, the world’s population is expected to approach 10 billion people. If no changes are made to our food systems, feeding these people is likely to require:
Fertiliser use has helped raise food production by 150% since the 1960s, but at the cost of considerable environmental impacts: greenhouse gas emissions, pollution of waterways and biodiversity loss among them. Consumers, food companies, governments, and farmers are looking for more a sustainable solution.
Polyhalite is a natural mineral that contains significant amounts of sulphur, magnesium, potassium and calcium plus numerous micronutrients, making it an ideal fertiliser. We simply extract it, crush it and granulate it to produce a natural, low carbon multinutrient product that is suitable for organic farming called POLY4.
POLY4 will help farmers achieve more balanced, sustainable fertiliser practices at a scale not seen in the industry for decades. The product delivers better results than the same blend of nutrients available from conventional sources today, delivering sustainability benefits beyond the nutrient content and setting POLY4 apart from traditional chemical fertilisers.
Anglo American is developing the Woodsmith project in the north east of England to access the world’s largest known deposit of polyhalite. The Woodsmith project is located on the North Yorkshire coast, just south of Whitby, where polyhalite ore will be extracted via two 1.6 km deep mine shafts and transported to Teesside via an underground conveyor belt in a 37 km tunnel, thereby minimising any environmental impact on the surface – a fundamental part of the Sustainable Mining Plan
