Access to Services – Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies

World Mental Health Day, on 10 October each year, is a global moment to raise awareness of mental health challenges and to mobilise efforts in support of mental wellness. This year, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has set the theme: “Access to Services - Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies.” It’s a timely reminder of the importance of mental health support during crises – from natural disasters to conflict zones, that deeply affect individuals, families, and communities.

Anglo American recognises that in moments of crisis, access to mental health services is not just important, it is lifesaving. That’s why we are committed to ensuring that our people and communities have the support they need, especially during times of uncertainty.

Our Commitment to Mental Wellness

Mental health is not just a personal issue, it’s a workplace issue, a leadership issue and a business imperative. Through our employee well-being programmes, on-site clinics and community health services, we are working to make mental health support accessible, inclusive and responsive to the needs of our people.

Each of our businesses has tailored support services to meet the unique needs of their workforce and communities. In the spirit of our Values, especially Care and Respect, we take the time to truly listen, appreciate different perspectives, and check in on each other.

Across our operations, we offer:

  • Confidential counselling services available to all employees and their immediate families.
  • Employee Assistance Programmes (EAPs) that provide 24/7 access to mental health professionals.
  • Mental health awareness campaigns.
  • Training for leaders and line managers to recognise signs of distress and respond with empathy and care.

Prioritising mental health in the workplace is not just a compassionate choice - it’s a strategic imperative. When companies foster environments that support psychological well-being, they unlock higher productivity, stronger employee engagement, and reduced turnover. Mental health initiatives signal to employees that they are valued beyond their output, cultivating trust and loyalty. In an era where burnout and stress are increasingly common, businesses that lead with empathy and invest in mental health resources will not only thrive but set a powerful example for others to follow.
