Keeping our people safe is an unremitting endeavour and a shared responsibility for every one of us at Anglo American. On Global Safety Day, we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to our number one Value – safety – and, while also taking the opportunity to recognise our progress towards our ultimate goal of creating an injury and fatality-free workplace where everyone returns home safely.

Below is a summary of how Anglo American observed Global Safety Day 2025 in the regions where we operate across the world:

London, UK

In London, we hosted a dynamic programme of workshops and events designed to underscore the critical importance of safety. With participation from the Metropolitan Police, St John Ambulance and Nuffield Health, colleagues engaged in interactive sessions focused on life-saving techniques and gained valuable insights into improving overall health and well-being.

The highlight of the day was a keynote address by David Lochridge, the renowned whistleblower and former Director of Marine Operations at OceanGate, where his expert advice and early warnings could have prevented the tragic submersible incident of 2023.

In his first public speaking engagement since the release of the Titan documentary on Netflix, David captivated our audience with his extensive experience as a submersible pilot and expert diver. He shared personal stories and reflections on the events that led to his dismissal from OceanGate for raising safety concerns, well before the tragedy had taken place.

David was joined by our panel of senior leaders: Richard Price, Chief Legal & Corporate Affairs Officer, Monique Carter, Chief People Officer, Sarah Bell, SVP, Safety, Health & Environment (SHE), and Kevin Smith, EVP, Corporate Affairs & Strategy, De Beers.

After the session, David said:

“It was honour to speak to the Anglo American team at their headquarters in London, marking their Global Safety Day. There was a fantastic series of speakers, panel members and audience, all who take the notion of safety very seriously – as we all should.”

Woodsmith, UK

Our Woodsmith site hosted a compelling talk delivered across multiple shifts to ensure broad engagement. The session featured Lisa Ramos and Dave Garton. Lisa shared her personal story of how a workplace accident had far-reaching consequences – not only for her but for her entire family. Her account powerfully illustrated how a single moment can have a profound and lasting impact, resonating strongly with attendees.

In addition to the keynote talk, senior leaders including Tom McCullan, Chief Executive Officer, Andrew Johnson, Project Director, and others took the opportunity to share their perspectives on safety and its significance across the business. Their contributions reinforced the importance of our collective commitment to safety and helped bring this year’s campaign to life.

The day’s events were well received, with the message of safety clearly striking a chord throughout the site.

South Africa

In South Africa, our Global Safety Day programme featured contributions from Alison Atkinson, Chief Projects & Development Officer, and Nevashnee Naicker, SVP Corporate Affairs in South Africa, who spoke with heartfelt conviction about the importance of a safety mindset, continuous learning and the profound personal impact of safety incidents. Their stories served as a poignant reminder that safety is not just a procedural priority – it is deeply personal. Every decision and every action carries weight.

Alison said:

“Speaking with colleagues in Johannesburg on Global Safety Day 2025, I was reminded that safety isn’t a checklist – it’s a mindset. It’s how we show up for our teams, our families and ourselves.

Whether we work at a mine site or in a meeting room, safety always begins the same way: with curiosity, courage and care.”

The day’s agenda also expanded the conversation to encompass broader dimensions of safety, including Gender-Based Violence and Harassment (GBV&HBV), cybersecurity and emergency response. These discussions reinforced the message that safety is multifaceted, requiring not only vigilance and preparedness but also empathy, awareness and a shared sense of responsibility.

Together, these sessions inspired reflection and reaffirmed our collective commitment to fostering a culture of care, accountability and proactive safety across all aspects of our work and lives.

Brazil

More than 4,000 colleagues across our operations in Brazil came together to reaffirm our safety culture in moment for collective reflection on safety as a non-negotiable. Safety is a daily commitment that underpins everything we do, and on 22 October, every member of our organisation in Brazil paused to participate in this important occasion.

China and Singapore

In a joint session between our Shanghai and Singapore offices, we were honoured to welcome ‘Singapore’s sprint queen’, Shanti Pereira, the 2023 Asian Athletics champion in both the 100m and 200m events. Shanti delivered an inspiring talk on the importance of mental and physical resilience.

She spoke about the value of listening to our bodies – understanding when to push forward and when to ease off – and the significance of staying focused on a purpose. Her insights offered meaningful lessons that are readily applicable to our everyday lives.

Peru

At Quellaveco, we celebrated Global Safety Day 2025 under the theme “Safety is Our Power”, recognising our colleagues as true heroes who make a zero-harm operation possible. Throughout October, more than 3,500 colleagues took part in activities, including talks, contests and on-site engagements across our offices and facilities in Lima, Moquegua and Ilo. The main ceremony was led by Tony Power, CEO of Anglo American in Peru, Isidro Oyola Mejía, General Manager of Quellaveco, and other leaders, who called on everyone to continue looking after one another so that we can all return home safely. The event also honoured the 2025 Safety Guardians – team members who delivered outstanding performance in protecting what matters most: people’s lives.

Chile

In Chile, colleagues across Los Bronces, El Soldado, Fundición Chagres, Las Tórtolas, and the Santiago office commemorated Global Safety Day.

The day was dedicated to sharing insights, lived experiences, and reinforcing a culture of care among the entire workforce, both employees and contractors. It was a moment to reflect on how safety transcends operations, age, and profession, becoming a deeply embedded value in our organisational DNA.

The event highlighted the collective commitment to building a safer future in mining. Through open conversations, shared stories, and active participation, teams reaffirmed their belief in working together to create an injury and fatality free workplace.

Finland

This year, Global Safety Day at Sakatti centred around the theme of cultivating a safe and positive working atmosphere within the community. The focus on psychological safety underscored the vital role each individual plays in shaping the workplace environment.

Under the guidance of a professional trainer, participants explored the topic through group discussions and collaborative brainstorming sessions. To demonstrate their collective commitment to this shared goal, team members at every site added their names to a pledge - symbolising unity and personal accountability in fostering a culture of safety.

With further activities having taken place in Australia and at Kumba and De Beers we will continue to update this article with our continued reflections.
