About Claudia

A long and diverse career in the mining industry

Claudia has a degree in civil chemical engineering from the University of Chile, an MBA from the University of Notre Dame and extensive experience in the mining industry.

She is currently Vice President of Joint Ventures & Strategic Partners at Anglo American and was previously Environmental Projects Manager and Plant Manager at Los Bronces.

Before joining Anglo American, Claudia worked for almost a decade at Codelco, the state-owned copper mining company, where she held various positions.

What motivated Claudia to pursue a career in mining?

“I have always liked processes and how industry, in general, can improve its performance and society through technology and innovation,” says Claudia.

“When I finished my studies as a Chemical Civil Engineer, I realised that mining was the number one industry in Chile and where it was possible to have a real impact on processes and, above all, on people's lives, as an engine of transformation, as a source of development and social mobility, both for those of us who work in the industry and for the communities where we operate.”

What has been some of the biggest challenges Claudia as faced in her career?

“Undoubtedly, the biggest challenge has been the balance between family and professional life,” says Claudia. “A career in mining, especially in operations, is demanding, requires dedication and long hours, which come at the expense of time with your family and children. I am fortunate to have a life partner who is my number one fan and who supports me at all times. I believe 100% in co-responsibility and teamwork – without his support I would not have been able to grow professionally.

“Another challenge has been facing leadership that opposed my feminine essence and caused me disagreements and discomfort, however, as time went by, experience and hard work opened up new paths for me. I am convinced that with collaboration and team participation, leaders grow and are successful.”

What advice would Claudia give other women aspiring to leadership roles in the industry?

“I would tell them to believe in themselves and be true to their essence. Working with rigour and discipline, forming teams – I think these are the keys to enjoying what we do. With that, opportunities for growth will surely come.”

Who has been influential in Claudia’s career journey?

“Several people have influenced my career depending on the stage, role or company,” says Claudia. “However, If I have to mention one person, it would be my son Vicente. He has influenced all my decisions, not only at work, but also personally. He is no longer with us, but what I learned from him still defines my decisions.”

What does it mean to Claudia to become the second female GM in our operations in Chile and the only female GM currently leading a smelter in Chile?

“I am happy to be able to continue to open the way for diversity and women’s participation,” says Claudia. “This opportunity is a recognition from Anglo American to all the women who work at the company. It gives us hope that we can, and deserve, to aspire to leadership roles.”

What does the future of mining look like to Claudia?

“Mining is a vibrant industry, central to societal development, climate change and building sustainable growth in balance with the environment, communities and their surroundings. Along with the resources it mobilises comes the responsibility to get it right, and that is the role of today's leaders.”

Outside of work, what are some of Claudia’s passions and interests?

“I love being in nature, walking, listening and observing biodiversity,” says Claudia. “In my free time, I birdwatch and photograph nature. That connects me with the earth, it’s my way of filling myself with energy. I also like gardening. I spend my weekends with a pair of pruning shears taking care of my plants in the company of my family.”
