Iron ore is the key raw material for steel, with 98% of mined iron ore used in steelmaking. We extract high-quality, premium iron ore from our Kumba operations in South Africa and Minas-Rio in Brazil.

Steel – with its requisite ingredient of iron ore – is an essential material for infrastructure and provides the backbone of long-term socio-economic development and the low-carbon economy.

Steel’s usage in everyday life:

  • Buildings - Steel frameworks enable skyscrapers, stadiums, and industrial facilities, with structures like the Empire State Building using 57,000 tonnes of steel.
  • Bridges and tunnels - Steel’s strength is vital for long-span bridges and tunnel linings, ensuring safety and longevity.
  • Transport Networks - Steel is used in railway tracks, metro systems, and port facilities, facilitating trade and mobility. Vehicles, from cars to ships, rely on steel for chassis and hulls, supporting global logistics.
  • Energy Infrastructure - Steel is essential for wind turbines, pipelines, and electricity pylons, enabling renewable and traditional energy systems.

Our premium iron ore from Kumba and Minas-Rio supports steelmakers globally, driving urbanisation and economic progress. By investing in sustainability, we ensure our iron ore continues to power infrastructure while aligning with a low-carbon future.
