In a groundbreaking move towards promoting the circular economy in mining, a new road constructed from over 95% tailings and slag has been inaugurated at the Las Tórtolas plant in Los Bronces, Chile. This 500-meter long and 9-meter-wide internal road is a testament to the potential of reusing mining waste safely and effectively.
The project is the result of a public-private partnership aimed at evaluating and promoting the reuse of mining waste as construction material for infrastructure. An agreement was signed with the General Directorate of Public Works (MOP) to further this initiative.
If the monitoring and evaluation by the authorities meet the established standards, this innovative approach could be applied to public roads and airport infrastructure in the future, marking a significant step forward in sustainable construction practices in Chile.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by key figures including Danilo Núñez, Undersecretary of Public Works; Suina Chahuán, Undersecretary of Mining; and Boris Olguín, General Director of Public Works. They were joined by Rodrigo Subiabre, Regional Leader of Innovation and Decarbonization at Anglo American, and Juan Pablo Schaeffer, Vice President of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability.
