Each year, in line with the Healthy Environment pillar of our Sustainable Mining Plan, we celebrate initiatives across Anglo American that promote lasting, positive environmental outcomes for the areas and communities in which we operate. This year’s theme for World Environment Day is centred on the call to #BeatPlasticPollution, rallying communities and corporates worldwide to implement and advocate for innovative solutions to reduce plastic pollution.

In celebration of the day, Kumba Iron Ore colleagues at our Kolomela mine in South Africa will be launching an initiative with the aim to #BeatPlasticPollution, called the "Bottle Cap Campaign". The goal of the campaign is to simultaneously address the issue of plastic pollution while tackling a wider societal issue related to the lack of vital necessities, namely sanitary pads and wheelchairs. In partnership with the Give2Green initiative facilitated by Interwaste, for every 250kg of bottle tops collected, 60 sanitary pads are donated, and for every 500kg of bottle tops collected, a wheelchair is donated to those in need.

Economic barriers that exist in the communities surrounding Kolomela – and in other communities surrounding our operations – often prevent access to these critical items, which can result in adverse effects on education and income generating opportunities, which in turn has a wider negative impact on overall economic participation. To address these challenges, the campaign aims to collectively improve the lives of women, girls, youth, the elderly, and anyone in the communities surrounding Kolomela affected by these economic barriers, while focusing on the critical need to reduce plastic waste through recycling.

Leaving a green footprint in Peru

Elsewhere across Anglo American, our environmental initiatives are leaving a green footprint, as is the case at our Quellaveco operation in Peru. Now in its fifth year, the ‘Quellaveco Leaves a Green Footprint’ campaign reaffirms our commitment to environmental conservation in the Moquegua region, where Quellaveco is located, by planting queñua trees – an indigenous species that is critical to the ecosystem of the region.

This year, Anglo American employees and representatives of strategic partners participated in the ‘Quellaveco Leaves a Green Footprint’ campaign, with our environmental affairs team, together with the agricultural technology company Pino SAC, leading the activity, ensuring that each stage of the process was carried out under the highest technical and environmental standards.

As part of the experience, participants visited Quellaveco's smart greenhouse, where the propagation and care of queñua seedlings is carried out. During the visit, participants were welcomed to an information session on the cultivation process of the queñua trees and the importance of this species in soil preservation and local biodiversity of the area.

Beyond Quellaveco

Earlier this year, in partnership with the regional government of Moquegua we planted 3,000 queñua seedlings in the town of Quequesani, in the Cuchumbaya district of Moquegua. This initiative has allowed us to take our green footprint beyond Quellaveco, contributing to the afforestation of other areas, and further enriching the ecosystem of the region.

With initiatives like ‘Quellaveco leaves a Green Footprint’, Anglo American is demonstrating its commitment to responsible and sustainable mining, with tangible actions to conserve ecosystems and develop innovative solutions to promote lasting, positive environmental outcomes for the areas and communities in which we operate.
