Early years education in Limpopo province will get a boost from the latest element of Anglo American South Africa’s (AASA) Education Programme.

Introduced in 2018, the programme is aligned to the Thriving Communities pillar of our Sustainable Mining Plan and aims to improve learning outcomes for 70,000 children in 100 schools in and around our mining communities by 2023.

This latest element of the Programme is designed for Early Childhood Development or ECD sites and will run for two years in settings that are local to Platinum’s Mogalakwena mine and feed the primary schools in the area.

South Africa’s education programme

The aim is to improve the quality of learning at participating sites by training and coaching practitioners in how to stimulate early learning in children aged between three and five years across key learning and developmental areas, and to implement a quality daily learning programme that is aligned to the South Africa’s National Curriculum Framework.

Supporting ECD sites is one the key components of the AASA Education Programme

Zaheera Soomar Head of Education with the Group Corporate Relations team

“We understand the greatest investment we can make in our country is to give our children access to quality education and early years provision - good or bad - can have a significant impact on a person’s academic outcome and, ultimately, their career.”

Measurement

The target is for 90% of children aged five years, who have benefitted from the Group’s ECD provision for two years, to meet the minimum requirements for school readiness (Grade R).

Anglo American will work in partnership with the Department of Basic Education (DBE), along with education specialists, to provide support, advice, mentoring, and coaching, prepare and deliver training workshops, and supply some structured learning programme resources.

"This commitment shows that Anglo American cares for the people of Mapela,” said Percy Nyalto, Representative, Mapela Tribal Council. “The relationship we have with Mogalakwena Complex will change our people’s lives. We are grateful and thank you for all that you do for us.”

“This is a step in the right direction; this is a proper foundation,” commented Selaelo Ralefeta, Manager, Mapela Education Circuit. “We will not fail if our children have a strong foundation.”

The Education team is currently working with the operations, DBE representatives, and delivery partners to launch ECD sites at Amandelbult, Kumba, De Beers Group, and Coal South Africa sites in the coming months.
