The UN’s International Volunteer Day recognises and promotes the tireless work, not just of UN Volunteers, but of volunteers across the globe. It’s a chance for us to recognise and celebrate the efforts of our employee volunteers across Anglo American and De Beers.

This year, to mark the day, which takes place on Monday, 5 December, we are sharing our Volunteering in 2021 report titled ‘Making a positive impact together.’

The report opens with a welcome letter

Volunteering is important for so many reasons – not only for the local communities and organisations that we give our time to. It’s also vital for Anglo American. It helps give us our social licence to operate. Through volunteering, the possibilities are endless, and by getting involved with projects like Ambassadors for Good, we each have the power to drive meaningful change where we live and work

Stephen Pearce Finance Director

International Volunteer Day 2022

The report showcases some of the charitable work performed by colleagues around the group in 2021 through our volunteering programmes: Ambassadors for Good in Brazil, Canada, Ireland, Namibia, Peru, Singapore, South Africa, United Kingdom (now a global programme since 2022) and the Embajadores Programme in Chile (now transitioned to Ambassadors for Good since 2022).

In 2021, 486 volunteers in Anglo American and De Beers donated more than 6,639 hours of their time to help 48,594 beneficiaries and 266 charities and social projects. Their donation time was supplemented by a grant donation of $393,000 from the Anglo American Foundation.

The projects were wide ranging and global, and included running an HIV and teenage pregnancy awareness campaign, helping to rehabilitate homeless people, giving careers guidance to Year 11 learners, helping adolescent girls to create a safe space for themselves, running training workshops about bioconstruction, planting 5,000 bulbs and giving tours of the city’s waterfalls to boost tourism.

Patrick Gibbs, Socio-Economic Development Advisory Principal and Ambassadors for Good programme lead commented: “Through collaboration our volunteers and partners continued to find new and innovative ways to deliver their programmes in 2021, often through a combination of virtual and in-person engagement. Each and every one of our volunteers has helped to make a difference to the lives of others.”

Applications for our 2023 Ambassadors for Good programme will open Wednesday, 1 February 2023. Read more about the programme here.
