With Anglo American as a lead industry sponsor, the 2025 African Mining Indaba has officially come to a close, hosted from 2-6 February at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC), South Africa. The theme for this year’s Indaba was “Future-Proofing African Mining, Today!”.

Anglo American had a strong contingent of representation and involvement at the Indaba this year, with 18 speakers involved over the course of the conference, as well as hosting a special Anglo American lounge experience for guests, signing an innovative partnership with Sasol, hosting the annual Anglo American gala dinner at Vergelelegen wine estate, and judging and sponsoring the prize for the 2025 Mining Innovation and Research Battlefield competition.

Duncan Wanblad’s keynote address

On Monday, 3 February, our Chief Executive Duncan Wanblad gave a keynote address at the Indaba, while in attendance were ministers, ambassadors, high commissioners, envoys and diplomats from many countries, notably including the Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources in South Africa, Gwede Mantashe.

Duncan explored what it will take to secure the future of African mining, focusing on investment confidence, policy stability and partnerships that create real economic value. Duncan said: “There is no single path forward, but collaboration is key. We cannot succeed unless Africa succeeds, and Africa cannot reach its full potential without a thriving mining sector. By working together across industries, governments and communities, we can build, innovate and transform mining to benefit people, economies and future generations. It is about inspiring each other to succeed.”

Anglo American lounge at Indaba 2025

Centred on the theme “Inspiring each other to succeed”, our lounge at the Indaba this year was a reflection of our purpose and progress. Each section embodied a chapter of our journey: the past, the present and the future. Together, they told the story of how we are shaping a mining industry that unlocks lasting value for people and the planet.

From interactive displays to inviting spaces for meaningful conversations, our lounge layout created opportunities to explore these stories and exchange ideas – because when we work together, we succeed.

Partnership with Sasol for renewable diesel production

On the sidelines of the Mining Indaba, we entered into a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) with Sasol to pilot the production of locally sourced and produced sustainable biomass feedstock for renewable diesel.

Strategic partnerships and collaboration are a key focus for Anglo American to unlock value creation, whether that is focused on Africa’s mineral resources, or solving some of the world’s most intractable challenges, such as climate change.

Commenting on the partnership, Alison Atkinson, our Projects & Development Director, said:

“With this JDA between Anglo American and Sasol, we are not only reinforcing our decarbonisation efforts, but are also contributing to South Africa’s climate change goals as we continue to develop our green mobility strategy. This important strategic partnership and collaboration will strengthen our commitment to reducing our greenhouse gas emissions by 2040."

Gala Dinner at Vergelelegen

At the annual Anglo American African Mining Indaba Gala Dinner, in partnership with conference organiser Hyve Group, 400 guests attended the event at Vergelelegen wine estate. Four Ministers were in attendance, which included the Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources in South Africa, Gwede Mantashe, Minister of Transport in South Africa, Barbara Creecy, DTIC Minister, Parks Tau, and Minister of Minerals and Energy in Botswana, Bogolo Kenewendo.

Mining Innovation and Research Battlefield 2025

The Mining Innovation and Research Battlefield, hosted at the Indaba, invites innovative, forward thinkers from across the sector, including mining industry professionals, academics, NGOs, and young leaders, to present solutions to an annual Innovation and Research Battlefield challenge.

This year, the challenge for competitors was: What are the innovative and sustainable solutions for revolutionising tailings management, and how can these be applied to achieve zero harm while supporting a more responsible and circular mining economy?

Anglo American was a partner of the competition and the sponsor of the $25,000 research grant, which was ultimately won by a cross-disciplinary team comprised of Lisa October and Resoketswe Manenzhe of the University of Cape Town, and Diana Kasymova of Metso. The research team proposed an ecosystem approach to using water as an enabler, pioneering a method for distributed water circuitry to maximise flotation performance while improving tailings management with up to zero water effluent waste.
