Protecting our natural environment

Our approach to environmental stewardship applies ecosystem thinking to promote lasting, positive environmental outcomes for the areas in which we operate.

To achieve the vision articulated in the Healthy Environment pillar of our Sustainable Mining Plan, we work to protect the biodiversity of areas in which we operate, account for and optimise our water use, support the circular economy throughout the value chain and across our business, and address air quality and noise around our operations.

The three key areas of focus

Our Healthy Environment pillar covers three key areas: biodiversity, climate change and water usage. The stretch goals we’ve set ourselves within these areas are designed to be challenging, to deliver them by 2030.

Our vision is to be carbon neutral across our operations.

Our objective is to deliver net positive impact (NPI) across Anglo American.

Circular economy

The products we provide are essential for the future of society, particularly as we strive to build a more sustainable and decarbonised world.

At Anglo American, we are applying circular economy principles to transform our mindset from that of a traditional extractive ‘take-make-dispose’ model into a more circular one that seeks to provide materials in an efficient and ethical manner while eliminating waste in all forms across the value chain.

Responsible mine closure

A mine continues to have social and environmental impacts long after the end of its operational life. Our approach covers the entire lifecycle of a mining site. Through leadingpractice closure planning, social transition, rehabilitation, effective execution and a bias for carbon neutrality, we strive for our mines to leave a positive, healthy and sustainable legacy.

Mine Closure Toolbox

We launched the Mine Closure Toolbox (MCT) in 2007. It is now used throughout our managed operations and also at some of our non-managed operations in partnership with other mining companies. The tool reinforces our desire for improved community relationships and engagement. Some of the more immediate benefits from our updated MCT can be lower closure liabilities, lower rehabilitation costs and more effective social investment and engagement.

Our updated MCT aims to further improve the quality of our closure planning and is now publicly available to download.

Managing tailings safely

The management and storage of waste rock and processed mineral residue – known as tailings – remains a critical issue for the global mining industry.

Tailings Management

Mineral residue management presents us with social, safety and environmental challenges throughout the lifecycle of our mining operations.

We embrace the introduction of the comprehensive Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management. We will continue to work to develop technological solutions – including remote monitoring – and implement enhanced and standardised control systems across our operations.
