IDWiM 2024: Celebrating Women in Mining
This year’s International Day of Women in Mining (IDWiM) celebrates the theme ‘I am Mining and I Belong’.
Our products are changing the world.
We foster a culture combining technological innovation with utmost consideration for our employees and everyone we interact with.
We have been an accredited Living Wage employer in the UK since 2014 through the Living Wage Foundation. Now, with the maturity and availability of Living Wage reference values for all the countries in which we have a presence, we have been able to conduct an in-depth assessment to understand our overall position regarding the Living Wage and our global employee workforce – in managed operations, excluding contractors, apprentices and interns.
With that in mind, we have established the following commitments:
Anglo American has been in partnership with the Fair Wage Network (FWN) since March 2021. The FWN is a reputable organisation that has developed an online database that covers Living Wage reference values for every country in the world and is considered experts in this field. We are in the process of exploring the accreditation process with the FWN with a view to formalising our status as a committed Living Wage employer.

Our latest global employee engagement survey was carried out in September 2022. Almost 30,000 employees answered questions across the dimensions of culture and values, safety, Purpose, leadership, inclusion and diversity. 89% of employees who responded to this survey say they are proud to work for Anglo American.
Over the past four years, we have consistently tracked colleague sentiment through quarterly and annual engagement surveys. The surveys are enabling us to build a picture of how extensively our Values are lived. Measured against the global average, our overall figures are very high. The data-driven findings are given high priority by senior management and are discussed at Board level; after each survey, action plans are put in place, at both the Group and business unit level, to address areas of our cultural development identified as needing more attention – such as psychological safety.
Mining has a smarter future – a future where you may barely notice some mines at all. And that’s a good thing. Out of sight, but never out of mind, tomorrow’s ultimate mine will long provide the precious raw materials our modern society needs.
Our purpose and valuesOur comprehensive set of policies, standards and principles ensure that we uphold the commitments we make to our stakeholders and work towards a common set of ambitions.
