Adopting a zero mindset

At Anglo American, we believe everybody, everywhere should come home safe at the end of their working day. ‘Always safe’ is our vision and safety is our number one value.

We are dedicated to safeguarding our people from harm. In 2024, we continued to strengthen our three key safety levers: to support operational leaders to spend more time in the field; deliver planned work aligned with our Operating Model and risk management strategy; and continue implementation of our Contractor Performance Management framework across the business.

Our Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Policy

Aligned with our Purpose, Values and internationally recognised SHE standards (ISO 45001 and 14001), the SHE Policy embodies three guiding principles:

Zero mindset

We apply the hierarchy of eliminating, avoiding, minimising, mitigating, remediating, rehabilitating and offsetting the impacts and risks arising from our activities.

No repeats

We take all necessary steps to continuously learn from SHE incidents and prevent them from re-occurring.

Simple non-negotiable standards

We apply common, non-negotiable minimum standards and procedures throughout the Group.

Empowering our people to feel safe inside and out

People remain at the heart of our approach to safety as we strive to become, and sustain, an injury and fatality free workplace.

We are continually improving our rules, procedures, and standards to ensure effective management and control of our risks. We are also developing and adopting new technologies to reduce exposure at the face of mining operations, while our Elimination of Fatalities programme has progressed our understanding of the causes of fatal incidents and improved our management of fatal risks.

Driving safety innovation

Innovation and smart technology are key to increasing the effectiveness of controls. Technology that physically removes risk and people from harm’s way remained at the forefront of our Smart Safety strategy in 2024, as we employed a data driven approach to prioritising business risks and quantifying the risk-reduction benefits of safety-focused technology.

Piloting new technology on a small scale before full implementation allows us to assess both its benefits and any risks tied to introducing new processes.

In 2024, our focus has been on piloting technologies that target specific risks, including uncontrolled release of energy, fall of ground, exposure to harmful substances, and fire and explosion.

Automation has been a significant factor in removing people from harm’s way.

At Quellaveco, a new technology that automates drill bit change-outs, addressing uncontrolled release of energy associated with that activity, was trialled, with plans for wider deployment across Anglo American's autonomous drill rigs.

Additionally, drones and robotics have been trialled for remote confined-space inspections, reducing exposure to harmful substances, with implementation tailored to site-specific needs.

Quellaveco also piloted remote blast clearance technology for blasting zones, by using AI to analyse drone footage in real time to accurately detect equipment and personnel within the blast-clearance zones.

This technology can enhance current critical controls for the blasting process on site, and marked another success in applying proven technology to mining specific challenges.

Responsible mine closure, transition and divestment

A mine continues to have social and environmental impacts long after the end of its operational life. Our approach covers the entire lifecycle of a mining site.

A ‘cradle-to-cradle’ approach Icon Plus

We take a ‘cradle-to-cradle’ approach by beginning to plan for closure in the exploration phase, and continuing until a sustainable post-mining land use and legacy has been achieved.

Mine rehabilitation Icon Plus

Our Group rehabilitation strategy outlines the requirements for our open-cut operations to integrate rehabilitation into their planning processes.

Our policies and supporting documents

Our comprehensive set of policies, standards and principles ensure that we uphold the commitments we make to our stakeholders and work towards a common set of ambitions.
