WeCare: supporting our employees & communities through Covid-19

At Anglo American, it is our duty to put our people first and do everything we can to help keep them healthy and safe.

As a business, Covid-19 affected us in numerous ways, with the communities in which we operate taking a financial, physical and emotional toll. Watch the video below with Dr Elton Dorkin, our Head of Health, discussing our response to the pandemic.

We have implemented an extensive health awareness and support programme called “WeCare”, specifically to protect the health and wellbeing of our more than 90,000 employees and full-time contractors around the world during the COVID-19 pandemic. As part of this programme, we are helping colleagues better understand how to protect themselves and others from catching the virus, monitoring their health to pick up early symptoms, and to manage their health if they test positive for COVID-19.

In order to provide the most effective and relevant support to our communities, we have designed a Community Response Plan (CRP) to guide site teams as to the initiatives that should be undertaken to support their host communities.

Key financial contributions

30% of fees/salaries donated

Anglo American’s Board directors and Group Management Committee members have agreed to donate 30% of their fees or salaries for three months to their personal choice of COVID-19 related charities or funds.

$2 million to Africa’s solidarity fund

In South Africa, Anglo American and De Beers will be making additional donations of $2 million to South Africa’s Solidarity Fund that exists specifically to help address the impacts of COVID-19.

$25 million on global relief

We are consistently building on the $25 million value of our additional COVID-19 global relief donations and in-kind contributions to date across our host jurisdictions in southern Africa, the Americas, Australia, and the UK.

General safeguarding measures and initiatives for employees

Our employees and the communities we operate in are at the heart of our business and we’ve taken decisive, wide-ranging measures to protect both the health and wellbeing of both them and their families. Some of the measures include:

Taking an agile approach to testing

We continue to adapt our approach as the pandemic unfolds and invest in new solutions to keep our people safe. Our comprehensive symptoms monitoring, and testing protocols enable us to quickly identify colleagues who have Covid-19 and reduce the chance of transmission in the workplace.

To further enhance our approach, we recently introduced a bespoke rapid antigen testing and result reporting process. This combines self-testing kits that we provide with our own simple reporting app. All visiting colleagues and guests also test on arrival, so no-one can enter without proof of a negative test result. The app data informs a dashboard enabling us to track test results in real-time and adjust our protocols as needed.

This process has already been successfully introduced in our London headquarters and we will be adapting it for use in other countries where appropriate, with Australia next to adopt the new approach.

Enhanced health expertise to drive better outcomes

Covid-19 has fundamentally reshaped how we manage health. Central to this has been enhancing the capability of our health team by adding dedicated public and occupational health specialists with expertise in areas such as respiratory health, modelling and data analytics.

This has enabled us to utilise the latest medicine, scientific insights and health data in new and emerging ways. We have also integrated our health and IT platforms and processes, helping us to better learn, manage and adapt our health activities for the future.

It has been a monumental team collaboration of effort, energy and commitment to look after and care for our people and support the communities in which we operate.
