Anglo American is a leading producer of PGMs, essential metals for cleaning vehicle exhaust emissions and as the catalyst in electric fuel cell technology.

Uses of PGMs

PGMs are used in an extensive range of diverse applications and industries – both existing and unexplored - ranging from the automotive sector to luxury goods.

Vehicles

Fuel cell electric vehicles provide a zero emissions powertrain technology, particularly well suited to heavy duty, long range and fleet vehicles.

Alternative energy

Anglo American is a leading producer of PGMs, essential metals for cleaning vehicle exhaust emissions and as the catalyst in electric fuel cell technology.

Jewellery

Platinum is also widely used in jewellery owing to its purity, strength, resistance to fading and ability to hold precious stones securely.

Our Platinum operations

We own and operate five mining operations in South Africa’s Bushveld complex, including Mogalakwena, Amandelbult and Mototolo, as well as the Unki mine, in Zimbabwe.

In South Africa, we also own smelting and refining operations which treat concentrates from our wholly owned mines, our joint operations and third parties.

Our flagship mine, Mogalakwena, is one of the highest margin PGM producers in the industry and, as the only large open pit PGM mine globally, is at the centre of a more flexible, competitive and lower risk business.

Amandelbult

Amandelbult consists of Tumela and Dishaba, two underground mines located between the towns of Northam and Thabazimbi in Limpopo, South Africa, on the northwestern limb of the great Bushveld mineral complex.

Mototolo/ Der Brochen
Mototolo/ Der Brochen

Mototolo/ Der Brochen mine is a PGM mine located in the north-eastern part of South Africa in Burgersfort, Limpopo. It represents one of the largest PGM reserves in South Africa.

Unki

Our mechanised PGM mine on the Great Dyke of Zimbabwe has a life span set to extend beyond 2040. It is the first mine in the world to publicly commit to be independently audited by the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance’s (IRMA) Standard for Responsible Mining.

Rising to the challenges within the Platinum industry with FutureSmart Mining™

Our PGMs business continues to invest in energy reduction and energy efficiency opportunities at its operations, switching to low carbon energy sources and developing renewable energy projects to transition its energy mix.

Projects in support of the Group’s carbon neutrality targets include the development of a hydrogen fuel cell powered heavy haul truck at the Mogalakwena mine, the continued development of a large scale solar photovoltaic facility (with project approval planned for 2021), as well as several other smaller scale projects to increase PGMs’ renewable energy supply.

Developing new and sustainable demand for the six Platinum group metals that we mine is a key part of Anglo American Platinum’s strategy.

Our market development activity is industry leading, encompassing a holistic ecosystem of programmes and workstreams to support PGM relevant innovations from the spark of an idea, through commercialisation to creating and sustaining scale.

We look beyond the direct customers of Anglo American Platinum, aiming to innovate end-user applications and markets to create sustainable, diversified demand segments and growth. We work with pioneering partners across the spectrum of activity, often setting up the necessary organisations and associations where they don’t exist, all to achieve these goals.

Themba was appointed Regional Director, Africa & Australia on 1 July 2023 with responsibility for Anglo American’s PGMs business, Kumba Iron Ore and Australian operations (steelmaking coal). He previously served as CEO of Bulk Commodities, starting that role in 2021 . Prior to that, he was CEO of Kumba Iron Ore from 2016 to 2021, and CEO for Anglo American’s Thermal Coal business in South Africa, having joined the Group in 2014. He is also a non-executive director of Anglo American Platinum and Kumba Iron Ore.

Themba has extensive experience in the resources industry, including 18 years in his native South Africa, as well as in the US and Australia. Before joining the Group, Themba was managing director for Huntsman Tioxide in South Africa until 2007 when he was appointed COO of Richards Bay Minerals, a joint venture between Rio Tinto and BHP. In 2011, he was seconded to Rio Tinto’s Australian coal business, before taking up the role of regional general manager for the Americas in 2012.

Themba is a Vice President of the Minerals Council of South Africa.

Prior to joining Anglo American Platinum in 2019, Craig held numerous roles across Anglo American, including Group financial controller, chief financial officer of the iron ore business in Brazil and coal business in South Africa, and head of the Group CEO’s office. Craig began his career as a trainee accountant at Deloitte in Johannesburg and joined Anglo American in London as a finance manager in May 2000.
