Platinum

A GLOBAL LEADER IN PLATINUM GROUP METALS, FROM RESOURCE TO MARKET

Our business

We provide the world with about 40% of newly mined platinum, making us the leading primary producer of platinum group metals (PGMs).

Our operations are located in the Bushveld Complex in South Africa and the Great Dyke in Zimbabwe.

With extensive ore reserves, we’re set to remain a leading PGM producer. We aim to sustain a competitive and profitable business that supports our communities’ needs over the long term.

Our business

In South Africa, we are optimising and reconfiguring our portfolio to create a more profitable, sustainable and socially acceptable company for all our stakeholders. Once complete, we expect to have operations at Mogalakwena, Tumela, Dishaba, Twickenham (a mine in development) and Der Brochen (a project-phase mine). In Zimbabwe, we own and operate the Unki platinum mine.

We have joint venture, operations at Modikwa, Mototolo, Kroondal and Bokoni mines in South Africa. We also have interests in Royal Bafokeng Platinum and Pandora mine.

We also own smelting and refining operations in South Africa, which treat concentrates not only from our wholly owned mines, but also from our joint ventures partners and third parties.

We are committed to developing the market for platinum group metals (PGMs) and invest both directly and through our PGM Development Fund. We are also a major participant in the Platinum Guild International (PGI) which plays a key role in supporting and growing the platinum jewellery market. Meanwhile, new technology and legislation continues to drive demand for platinum in the car industry – both through use of auto catalysts and through increased use of fuel cells.

uses of platinum

Platinum’s diverse range of applications make it one of the most valued materials in the world today.

It is widely used in jewellery, due to its purity, resistance to fading and ability to hold jewels securely.

Platinum and other platinum group metals (PGMs) enable catalytic converters to strip pollutants from car exhaust gases, and demand for PGMs from the car industry continues to grow as emissions regulators become ever more stringent.

Platinum has a great range of other uses in the chemical, electrical, medical, glass and petroleum industries. And with rising concern about environment and energy costs, there’s growing interest in platinum fuel cells as an alternative energy source.
