Iron ore and manganese

A unique iron ore footprint across South Africa and Brazil

Our business

In a world of declining quality iron ore supplies, our iron ore operations are positioned to supply premium products to our customers, helping meet ever growing demand.

We have large, high quality iron ore resources in South Africa and Brazil. In manganese we have a 40% share in Samancor Holdings in South Africa and Australia.

Our business

In South Africa we have a majority share (c.70%) in Kumba Iron Ore, a global leader in the seaborne lump and fine ore markets. We export via the port of Saldanha Bay to China, Europe, Japan and South Korea. With Kumba, we’re well positioned to supply the growing Asia-Pacific and European steel markets.

In Brazil, we’ve developed the integrated Minas-Rio operation, which will supply the global market for iron ore pellets with its high iron content (c.68% Fe content) product. The ore is carried from the mine to the port along a 529-kilometre pipeline.

Samancor Holdings is the world’s largest producer of manganese ore and among the top global producers of manganese alloy. We hold a 40% interest in Samancor through a joint venture with BHP Biliton.

uses of iron ore and manganese

Of all the metals that make modern life possible, steel is the most widely used – and iron ore is its main ingredient.

Iron ore is needed for train tracks and other types of infrastructure, which is one reason for the great demand from emerging economies such as China and Brazil.

But it’s also used in medicine, cosmetics, engineering, construction, paint and a whole range of products we need for modern life.

Technology is demanding increasingly sophisticated forms of steel. Manganese is a vital component of stainless steel and many advanced alloys.
