To make a real difference to the future, we’re preparing our leaders of tomorrow now. And if you’ve got what it takes, then we’ll support you all the way.

At Anglo American, we offer all kinds of opportunities, training and financial support for students and graduates around the world, helping make us an employer of choice.

In this Q&A, Hayley Schneider, HR Advisor for our Exploration function discusses her experiences of joining Anglo American as a graduate and the support she’s received through our variety of programmes.

Anglo American

Q: Why did you want to work for Anglo American?

HS: Anglo American is seen as a significant player in the global economy. It is a brand that one can be proud to be associated with and so by starting my career at Anglo American, I felt that this would give my career the credibility and opportunity I was looking for.

Q: What attracted you as a graduate?

HS: I studied a Business Science degree with honours in Organizational Psychology at the University of Cape Town. As a graduate in South Africa, I was looking to work for a company whose values aligned with my own, takes development seriously and has an international presence. For me, this was Anglo American and it was an opportunity I could not refuse.

Q: What programmes did you take part in?

HS: I was selected by Anglo American for the BLAST (Building Leaders and Shaping Talent) graduate programme in South Africa in 2012. In my first role, I worked in the Transformation Unit at the Johannesburg Corporate Office. I then worked for Coal as an HR Advisor and spent this time working at Kleinkopje and Greenside. Following this, I moved to London where I worked as a Resourcing Analyst in the Talent and Learning team and have recently moved to my current role. I have also attended The Achiever Programme – a platform for the development of young leaders in Anglo American by building their personal and interpersonal skills and the business acumen necessary to function effectively in the contemporary world of sustainable business.

Q: How are you supported as a graduate at Anglo American?

HS: I have been fortunate to work both on mine sites and in our corporate offices in roles within Government Relations and HR. Anglo American has supported an international assignment in London in order for me to gain further exposure to HR. I am also currently completing my MSc in Organizational Behaviour, which Anglo American has supported.

Q: What advice would you give to graduates who want to embark on a career at Anglo American?

HS: Anglo American is a company that really cares about its employees. If you are willing to put in the hard work necessary to succeed in a company such as ours, you will reap the benefits. I would advise graduates to take advantage of the opportunities that come their way as this is a pivotal stage in their careers where you can gain a broad range of experience.
