Last weekend in Chile, we launched a safety initiative for a main road that provides access to our Los Bronces mine, making sure that all users of the route – Anglo American employees and the broader community alike – stay as safe as possible.

The G-21 route, covered by the new safety initiative, runs from Santiago and provides road access to our Los Bronces copper mine. During winter months in the region, traffic increases on the road exponentially, as do accident and emergency situations. In order to protect road users, which during peak periods includes Anglo American employees, tourists and community members, the Municipality of Lo Barnechea and Anglo American have launched a new safety initiative that will benefit all road users.

The initiative uses cutting-edge technology and is the result of collaboration between both organizations. As part of the work, a new safety system has been introduced along the road that includes a network of surveillance cameras, an automatic vehicle counting station, speed control and an emergency communication system for road users, which local company Barnechea Security will monitor.

Throughout the year, tourists, workers, athletes and neighbours, drive along the G-21. Today, thanks to the project developed jointly with Anglo American, the road now has a new security system, which allows a prompt reaction of our teams to any incident. This is a complex route, which boasts high traffic in this winter season, where athletes, tourists and neighbours live together. This new system will be tremendously beneficial for all those who use it.

Safety is one of the fundamental values for Anglo American and for this reason we have been working for many years to improve the conditions of the G-21 route, which is a road shared by both Farellones community members, tourists and workers from our Los Bronces mine. The manifestation of this commitment is a great progression of the work that we have carried out together with the municipality and the community, with the end goal of having a more secure and controlled road for the benefit of all its users.

The G-21 route now features seven route visualization cameras; SOS communication posts for those needing assistance; a vehicle and speed control system; a communications platform; and a 24 hour control room. In total, the system cost 420 million pesos [approximately US $625,000].

People are our business, and we’ve no doubt about our first priority: doing everything we can to keep our employees and community members safe and well.
