In this employee Q&A, we speak to Sammy Michaels, working in our marketing department in Singapore, to find out more about his role as an accounting services manager.

At Anglo American, our marketing department is responsible for all sales activities for iron ore, metallurgical coal, thermal coal, platinum group metals (PGMs), copper, nickel, and niobium, providing these products in a variety of forms to customers around the world. In this article, Sammy tells us about his experience in this team and his passion for the mining sector.

How would you describe your role?
My team is responsible for the 'raw' data that is used by the financial reporting team to help communicate and inform our marketing activities. We aspire to process large amounts of data with 100% accuracy.

Anglo American

A platinum opportunity

What made you want to work in the mining industry?
The mining industry is complex and unique, providing opportunities to learn about and get involved in multiple operational and financial processes and decisions. The commodities produced by the mining industry act as drivers for the global economy, and being at the forefront of this is fascinating.

What have been your greatest opportunities and challenges?
We are a new team that has recently taken ownership of activities that were previously performed in London and South Africa. This has been a major transition, and one which we are adapting to. While we are getting to grips with our roles and responsibilities, we are preparing for an overhaul of our key accounting and finance software, which will hopefully be completed by mid-2016, and will improve on our current processes.

What has made you most proud in your career at Anglo American?
I am a fresh face to Anglo American, with only a few months under my belt. During this time I have been most proud of the achievements of the newly formed accounting services team. We have forged a united team that has responded to major transitions and new responsibilities. The team has worked tirelessly, into the night, to support our colleagues around the world. Of this I am both proud and impressed.

What’s the best part of your job?
Variety – every day I am being faced with new challenges and experiences.

What’s the most important thing you have learned in your role?
The most important learning for me has been how to work with different cultures around the world. My team services different people and teams globally, each with individual personalities, and with their bespoke requests. My manager has always been on hand to help me, and it has been a great learning experience.
