As International Women's Day focuses the world’s attention on ending violence against women, we hear about a centre in South Africa that is helping women escape abuse and build new lives for themselves and their children.

An inspiring home in South Africa is providing a safe space, and a helping hand to a new life, for women and children fleeing from domestic violence.

Founded more than 20 years ago, Bethany House has saved more than 1,300 women and children from a life of abuse and given them the confidence and practical help needed to ensure they can stand on their own once again.

Bethany House includes Bethany Home, a shelter for abused women and their children in Bertrams, Johannesburg and Little Saints, a pre-school in Bezuidenhout Valley for the children of the women at Bethany House and other children from the area. As well as accommodation and pre-school, it offers services including counselling, arts and crafts activities for therapy and income, and job and accommodation placements.

About 55 women and children call Bethany home at any one time, with each woman offered individual skills development and rehabilitation programmes. They stay between six and 12 months and sometimes longer if necessary.

The Anglo American’s Chairman’s Fund, the mining group’s South African-based charitable funding initiative, has provided 840,000 Rand (US$61,000) to support the home since 2006, benefiting 330 women and children during this time.
