Modern slavery and human trafficking are crises of our time. Centuries after slavery was officially abolished, thousands of people are still being exploited and sold as slaves across the UK.

According to official statistics in 2017/18, there were 136,000 people estimated to be living in modern slavery in the UK. There has been a fivefold increase in the number of UK victims supported by The Salvation Army in the last six years.

Anti-Slavery Day 2019 gives us an opportunity to raise awareness of human trafficking and modern slavery. Anglo American is a member of the United Nations Global Compact UK Local Network Modern Slavery Working Group. We published our first UK Modern Slavery Act Statement back in July 2017, which has been updated in December 2018.

Additional support

Anglo American is proud to be adding its voice to help combat this social challenge and reinforcing our commitment. We prohibit and take a zero-tolerance position in respect of all forms of modern slavery in our organisation and in our supply chains.

There are more slaves today than there have ever been in modern history.

As the number of victims of modern slavery and human trafficking continues to increase, we are delighted to be providing additional support through our partnership with The Salvation Army, who have partnered with the UK Home Office and Ministry of Justice since 2011 to support all adult victims of modern slavery and their dependants.
