We have retained our place on the well-regarded Bloomberg Gender-Equality Index (GEI), recording an overall score of 82.83%, upfrom last year’s 81%.

Anglo American plc has appeared on the Index for three years now. Our PGMs business, who appeared a year ahead of the Group, are also on the 2023 Index.

The 2023 GEI features 485 companies in 45 countries and regions across 11 sectors and 54 industries.

To make it on to the Index, which is not ranked, companies are assessed by answering 70 questions under five headings:

Bloomberg Gender Equality Index
  • Leadership & talent pipeline
  • Gender pay & equal pay parity
  • Inclusive culture
  • Anti-sexual harassment policies
  • External brand

Liz Douglasour Group Head of HR - Corporate Functions and Inclusion and Diversity commented: "We are very pleased to be included once again in this year’s Bloomberg Gender-Equality Index. Our increased overall score and strong performance in all five areas of measurement show that we continue to mature our approach to creating a fully inclusive workplace for everyone. Our female representation at Band 5 and above currently stands at 32%, on track to meet our target of 33% by the end of this year.

“And we are again delighted to be joined on the GEI this year by our colleagues from PGMs. Over the last few years, we have built a strong basis through intentional focus on areas such as inclusive leadership; bullying, harassment, and victimisation (BHV); flexible working; family friendly and carer support; and as a result we are seeing a more inclusive business evolve.

“The data we receive from the Index will inform our actions to allow us to continue to make strides so that Anglo American is an inclusive and psychologically safe workplace, where everyone can be themselves, fulfil their potential, and thrive."

CEO of our PGMs business, Natascha Viljoen, commented: “We are extremely pleased to be recognised in the GEI for the fourth consecutive year, and equally celebrate the overall year-on-year growth in the number of peer companies listed in the index. An expanding index can only mean that corporate cultures in South Africa and globally are starting to benchmark against the best companies in the world and driving change.

“We are proud to continue our ongoing efforts to build a workplace where everyone can fulfil their potential – regardless of their gender, race or religious background. We will continue to use the GEI as a tool in our quest for continuous improvement as an employer of choice.”

Peter T. Grauer, Chairman of Bloomberg and Founding Chairman of the U.S 30% Club, added: "Congratulations to the companies that are included in the 2023 GEI.
"We continue to see an increase in both interest and membership globally, reflecting a shared goal of transparency in gender-related metrics.”
