2019 has been a year full of growth and opportunity here at Anglo American. In order to maintain a clear, meaningful vision for the future – it’s important to reflect on the year that's passed. Here’s a look back at some of our greatest milestones from this year.

Key takeaways from 2019

  • In February, we supported the 2019 Mining Indaba conference–which is the largest mining investment event in the world.
  • During March, Anglo American Platinum donated more than 270 acres of land to the Rustenburg community in South Africa–which provided housing and resettlement to residents.
  • For May, we became a founding sponsor of the World Bank’s Climate Smart Mining Fund. This program aims to ensure sustainable mining practices for energy transition, such as wind and solar power. We also approved the construction of a custom-built diamond recovery vessel between De Beers Group and the Namibia government, located in South Africa. Once the project is finished, the vessel is expected to add 500,000 carats annually to Debmarine Namibia’s production–which is a 35 percent increase compared to its current production.
  • In July, we announced our approval of the Aquila hard coking coal project in Queensland, Australia. These operations are expected to bring in more than 3.5 million tonnes of coal per year until 2028. Additionally, we have launched a buyback programme that will return 1 billion dollars to shareholders by the end of March in 2020.
  • September marked a special moment in history for Anglo American as the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA) led their first independent audit at our Unki platinum mine in Zimbabwe.
  • In October, we partnered with an electric utility company called ENGIE to develop the world’s largest hydrogen-powered mine truck. The truck will also have a load capacity of approximately 300 metric tonnes. This groundbreaking collaboration has opened the door for many opportunities involving FutureSmart Mining.

In 2019, we were able to strengthen our innovation-led partnerships, support community projects, and maintain shareholder relationships. We look forward to another year of fulfillment in 2020. From all of us at Anglo American, we hope you have a safe and festive season.
