What better way to understand the scale of a mine than by air?

Mogalakwena is our flagship platinum operation, located near the town of Mokopane within the Mogalakwena Local Municipality, which is one of the six local municipalities that form part of the Waterberg District, situated in the Western quadrant of the Limpopo Province in north eastern South Africa.

Mogalakwena mine was established in 1993, is the largest open pit platinum mine in the world, and is 100% owned by Anglo American.

The mine increased production by 5% to 412,000 ounces (2015: 392,000 ounces) in 2016, including 31,000 ounces (2015: 24,000 ounces) processed at the Baobab concentrator. It had a strong mining performance last year, with an 8% increase in tonnes milled.

Looking beyond the mine operations to the surrounding communities, we champion sustainable living and ensure that we fulfill our social and labour plan in those areas.

If you want to learn more about Mogalakwena, watch the video on this page, where you can experience a replicated aerial view of the full operations using 3D satellite mapping.
