Construction of the Quellaveco copper mine is helping to power Peru’s economic growth and future prosperity.

After years of planning and consultation, we have started work on our latest copper mine, Quellaveco in Peru. Located in the Moquegua region, the mine is a rare and exciting addition to our diverse portfolio. When the mine reaches peak production, it is expected to provide 300,000 tonnes of copper equivalent every year.

Copper production, however, is only half the story for this amazing mine.

“We are grateful for the strong support we have gained from our host communities and at the national level. Quellaveco should bring very significant opportunities and sustainable benefits to the lives of those we employ, our business partners, the surrounding region and Peru as a whole, for decades to come.”1

Mark Cutifani Chief Executive

Powering Peru through community collaboration

As the project undergoes development, the local people, environment and economy are all intrinsically linked to its success. Through consultation, direct commitment and continuation of support, we have created a project we are truly proud of.

Making the connections
To succeed with any mining activity requires the full support of local communities and stakeholders. At Quellaveco, the support of local communities is the result of an intensive 18-month consultation with local authorities and community representatives. We met with representatives to define how Quellaveco could positively contribute to the area, including the long-term sustainable development of the Moquegua region. The dialogue was hugely successful, resulting in specific long-term commitments related to water management, environmental protection and social investment.

Supporting environmental sustainability
In total, we agreed on 26 detailed goals related to sustainable management. Of particular focus is water management. Working in an area where water is scarce, our operations draw water from the Titire river, which is unfit for human and agriculture. We also collect excess rainfall and share it with the communities.

Moving business and society forward
Quellaveco will provide 9,000 jobs during its construction phase and 2,500 jobs when operating.

Away from the mine, we have a long history of supporting social enterprises and initiatives. The Emerge Peru enterprise programme has helped over 400 local entrepreneurs to establish their own businesses. We have also trained more than 900 small businesses in local procurement methodologies and practices.

That’s not all. The USD $10 million Quellaveco Fund has financed 30 local community projects in the areas of education, health, nutrition and agriculture. The impact these projects have is far removed from the operations at the mine. For example, the income for olive producers has increased by 65% the establishment of 20 entrepreneurial networks, designed to sell agriculture. In total, these networks have helped to improve the lives of 25,000 people in Peru – and that’s just the beginning.

Fuelling the future
The impact a mine has on a surrounding area is integral to its overall success, beyond its financial return. By working in partnership with local communities, we will support the local people, environment and economy in Moquegua for years to come.
