Since 2019, Anglo American’s Quellaveco mining operation in Peru has strategically integrated the use of drones to significantly enhance our environmental monitoring and safety protocols. These advanced drones are equipped with cutting-edge technology that enables them to capture high-resolution 2D and 3D imagery – a process known as photogrammetry. This capability is not just about collecting data, but also plays a crucial role in our overall approach to sustainable and safe mining practices.

The captured images are processed and uploaded into a virtual reality (VR) platform. The VR platform allows us to create a detailed, immersive representation of the entire mining operation. By providing a comprehensive visual overview, it enables various stakeholders, including processing teams, operational managers and technical experts, to remotely access and analyse the site in near real-time. The virtual environment supports collaborative decision-making, offering insights that are vital to optimising operations, ensuring safety and maintaining high technical standards.

The use of this technology also facilitates more proactive and precise interventions, enabling us to anticipate potential challenges and address them before they escalate.

The strategic integration of drone technology into our operations exemplifies our commitment to FutureSmart Mining™ – Anglo American’s innovation-led pathway to make our mining processes safer, more efficient, and with a minimal environmental footprint.
