Collaborative Regional Development (CRD), a crucial element of our Sustainable Mining Plan, was highlighted in the launch edition of a new online platform, Sustainable Business Now.

The platform, which was unveiled at the 2023 World Economic Forum in Davos, was created by global research organisation, Globescan, and software company SAP. Its aim is to showcase how different businesses are responding to sustainability challenges and to share insights and best practices from leading companies around the world.

In the piece about CRD, our Group Head of Responsible Business Partnerships, Jon Samuel, and Mzila Mthenjane, Executive Head, Stakeholder Affairs for South African mining firm Exxaro, talk about how our approach identifies an area’s socio-economic development needs where the opportunities to make an impact are the greatest. The video explores how we then develop a series of partnerships with key sectors and organisations in that region.

Examples of CRD initiatives include our work with TechnoServe and other partners in South America, where we support and develop local entrepreneurs and small businesses, helping them build the skills and capacity to grow and thrive. In South Africa our Impact Catalyst partnership is identifying and implementing development projects at the regional scale.

"These CRD partnerships allow us to deliver on our commitment to build the foundation for long-term, sustainable development in our host regions, far beyond the lifecycle of the mine,” Jon explained.

“We were delighted to have the chance to share that approach to social programmes via the Sustainable Business Now platform and honoured to be among the first companies to be featured. We look forward to hearing from other businesses in the coming months and learning from how they tackle their particular sustainability challenges.”
