Our Brazil business has just announced a partnership with the Port of Açu to study the possibility of re-using the water that is used to carry ore from our Minas-Rio operation in Conceição do Mato Dentro to the port.

On arrival at the port, the content of pipeline goes through a filtration process, separating the water from the ore. At the moment, the effluent is then treated and disposed of, legally, in the sea.

The partnership will study the possibility of treatment and use of part of the effluent in the port’s industrial complex - the Port of Açu has the third largest iron ore handling terminal in Brazil.

This is another partnership that’s guided by our Purpose of re-imagining mining to improve people's lives

“It’s aligned with the goals and objectives of our Sustainable Mining Plan. The idea is to increase reuse as much as possible in our operations.”

Wilfred Buijn, CEO of Anglo American in Brazil, added: “We continue to work to encourage and build an increasingly sustainable environment, which provides solutions for our business and wider society.”

Through another water-related partnership, with the Espinhaço Institute, the company is investing R$2 million in a project that will recover 23 degraded springs in the Santo Antônio river basins, located in Conceição do Mato Dentro, where our Minas-Rio operation is based.

It has also provided R$7 million to the Juntos pelo Araguaia programme, the largest initiative for the revitalisation of river basins in Brazil. The aim is to restore forest areas, preserve the springs, and conserve the quality of soil and water in the Araguaia River Basin, as well as helping to improve sanitation in several cities in the region.
