At Anglo American our approach to deliver positive outcomes on nature is aligned to the Kunming Global Biodiversity Framework as well as global commitments to take action to halt nature loss and ensure that the world is nature positive by the end of this decade. Part of the approach is identifying and implementing nature-based solutions along the full mining lifecycle to deliver positive outcomes for nature, climate and society to transform the way we operate and develop mining operations.

Nature is finally starting to get the attention it needs and although the state of nature around the world is in serious decline, our approach to protecting and managing biodiversity in and around our operations is not new to Anglo American. From a strong foundation of internal biodiversity standards being set, to our 2018 Net Positive Impact commitment and global NGO partnerships spanning 15 years, we have always been committed and innovative in our approach.

We are proud to have led the way in the use of Environmental DNA (eDNA) biomonitoring technology, which can identify hundreds of species across different taxonomic groups from a single sample, whilst being quicker and safer to undertake in the field. This has been implemented at over 18 of our operations worldwide and forms part of technology-led approach to our Biodiversity Management Programmes.

We recognise the need to demonstrate through evidence-based indicators that our sites are accounting for and moving towards global nature-based targets, as our Head of Nature and Land Ian Hudson explained: “Aligning with reporting and disclosure requirements and metrics will support how we communicate the way our business measures and manages our key interfaces with nature, and our Net Positive Impact (NPI) trajectory across our portfolio and regions in which we operate.”

Our Commitment to Nature and Delivering Net Positive Outcomes

We recently confirmed Anglo American as an early adopter of the TNFD recommendations (Taskforce on Nature-based Financial Disclosures) and we are proud to be an active member of the Taskforce. As part of our participation from the outset in the design, development and creation of the TNFD Framework, we piloted the early stages of the LEAP (locate, evaluate, assess and prepare) assessment. This provided us with an opportunity to increase the relevance of the framework to the mining and metals sector and catalyse a wider positive impact on nature.

As an ICMM member we are also committed to contributing to a nature positive future and contributed to the development and launch of the new Nature Position Statement.

Global disclosure, reporting and target setting mechanisms are now calling for evaluations of ecosystem integrity or assessments of the state of nature. Aligning with these reporting, disclosure, standard requirements and metrics will support how we communicate our performance, business resilience with nature, and the site specific and business NPI trajectory across our portfolio and regions in which we operate. Having data at the ecosystem and species level places this work at the forefront of future requirements on nature reporting.

Ian added: “In addition to giving our stakeholders confidence in our approach to achieving a net-positive impact on biodiversity, we believe data and disclosure around nature-based targets will help drive more collaboration and landscape action across mining and other sectors to create an integrated positive impact on nature that will also support positive outcomes for climate, water and society.”
