To achieve our ambition to be the leading global mining company we know that we must deliver value to all our stakeholders. How do we do this? By meeting the company's six key sustainability commitments that represent business risks we need to manage and also significant opportunities for us to create value for society. Here is the first of three blogs on how we are making a real difference to achieve our ambition and meet the six key elements.
Climate Change
Since 2010, our energy and methane management projects have saved $75 million and nearly 3.3 million tonnes of CO2. These have included a $12 million independent power producer project in Rustenburg, South Africa, which recovers waste heat energy from our platinum converting process. Using a new high-pressure water system to extract waste heat and return it as energy to the grid, it’s a new approach that harvests 20 MW of thermal energy and returns approximately 3.75 MW of electrical energy. The potential saving on carbon emissions from this project alone is approximately 19,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.
