In Chile, we have launched a pilot photovoltaic plant that has been built over a tailings pond – the first of its kind in the world.

The initiative consists of 256 photovoltaic panels (330 watts each) installed on Las Tórtolas pond at Los Bronces copper mine, with the capacity to generate 86 kW. The panels are located on a floating island and they are connected to a service room where the energy that the system generates will be monitored daily. This project will reduce CO2 emissions by 58 tonnes per year, generate 150,000 kWh/year of renewable electric power and reduce water evaporation in the area it covers by 80%.

At the launch event, mining has diverse challenges regarding many areas and one of them is caring for the environment. This type of initiative positions Chile at the global forefront of mining innovation for a sustainable industry – an excellent idea for mining traceability and for the efficient use of water.

Developing new solutions

This initiative will help reduce water evaporation from the surface of Las Tórtolas to increase availability for recirculation in the mining process. Currently, Los Bronces recirculates between 70-80% of it process water.

“This initiative reinforces Anglo American’s commitment to develop new mining practices that adapts and connects with the interests of neighbouring communities and that has made innovation a fundamental axis of its activity. We believe that it should be a priority to re-imagine mining, challenging the way things have always been done. By actively developing new solutions and stimulating new ways of thinking and working, we move towards increasingly sustainable mining,” explained Patricio Chacana, Los Bronces Operations Vice-President.

The results of this initiative will be monitored during 2019 to determine where to pilot it at a larger size plant.
