Earth Day has been marked on 22 April every year since 1970. It’s dedicated to demonstrating support for environmental protection and today incorporates a wide range of events around the world involving 1 billion people in more than 193 countries.

At Anglo American, Healthy Environment is a priority and one of the pillars of our  Sustainable Mining Plan. We focus on causing zero harm to the environment, delivering a net positive impact (NPI) for biodiversity and, at the same time, leaving a lasting positive legacy for society.

We combine protecting and restoring nature with investing in innovative technology and nature-based solutions to mitigate impacts. Our Group rehabilitation strategy, which sets out what our operations need to do, to integrate rehabilitation into their planning processes, is integral to improving site rehabilitation outcomes across the business.

We have 12,000 hectares of rehabilitated land that is being returned to grazing, cropping and native ecosystems, as well as other uses such as solar farms. Our aim is to regenerate former mining areas and other land so that they are safe, stable, non-polluting and self-sustaining and can be used in the way that communities want, once we are no longer mining in their area.

Going back 15 years, we have worked in partnership with conservation agencies, governments, local communities, and NGOs to deliver projects that balance our impact and deliver positive outcomes.

We collaborate with biodiversity leaders and we’re the only mining company to be represented in the Taskforce on Nature related Financial Disclosures (TNFD)

The Taskforce has developed a set of disclosure recommendations and guidance that encourage and enable business and finance to assess, report, and act on their nature-related dependencies, impacts, risks and opportunities. We helped to develop the TNFD framework and the guidance for our sector.
In January 2024, we confirmed our early adoption of the TNFD recommendations and have committed to making TFND-aligned disclosure through our reporting from 2025.
