Representatives from conservation organisation Fauna & Flora International (FFI) visited our Woodsmith mine site in Whitby on the North Yorkshire coast in the UK last week to meet our Chief Executive Mark Cutifani and members of the Crop Nutrients environment team to reaffirm a long-standing collaboration.

Established over a century ago, FFI is the world’s oldest international wildlife conservation organisation, who have supported over 321 partner organisations, including governments, universities, business and NGOs across 40 countries and 140 conservation projects.

We have been working in partnership with FFI for over almost 14 years and that partnership has evolved over time. FFI ensure we stick to our commitments around biodiversity, while also offering advice and support on what more we could be doing to minimise our environmental impact.

Fauna and Flora
We wanted Fauna & Flora International to see what we’re doing in the UK following the acquisition of the Woodsmith Project, so we arranged for their CEO Mark Rose to meet our CEO Mark Cutifani on site and also to meet a broader, wider group from both parties.

Ian Hudson Anglo American’s Head of Environment

“We had some great conversations and got a good perspective of what the team are doing at Woodsmith on site in regards to our biodiversity commitments. We also took some of the first eDNA samples on site as part of our partnership with Nature Metrics and FFI.’’

Pippa Howard, FFI’s Director, Extractives and Development Infrastructure said: “We have been working with Anglo American for almost 14 years now and that partnership is going from strength to strength. This visit was really important, not only for our CEOs to meet, but also to reaffirm our relationship – providing impetus to the work we’ll do in the future.

“We’ve been working on nature positive and net positive impact with Anglo American for many years and the company is making great strides, particularly in new projects like at Woodsmith.”

Anna Lyons, Senior Programme Manager, Extractives and Development Infrastructure with FFI, added: “I came away feeling positive about the work that is going on at Woodsmith and the approach that they’re taking.”
