Today is World Food Day. A time of the year to reflect upon the importance of a good diet and balanced nutrition.
Although the connection between Anglo American and the food industry may not at first be obvious, did you know that the phosphates we produce are essential to producing crop fertilisers, helping to grow more plentiful and healthier crops to feed families across the world?
Phosphates: The key to growth
Fertilisers provide plants with the essential chemical elements needed for growth, no matter the conditions and whatever the weather.
We produce a wide variety of phosphate-based fertilisers for the agricultural sector and our phosphates presence comprises a mine and two chemical processing facilities in Brazil.
Mining and beneficiation of the phosphate ore to produce phosphorus pentoxide (P2O5) concentrate takes place at the Chapadão mine in Ouvidor, in Goiás state, Brazil. Further processing into intermediate and final products occurs at processing plants located in Catalão, adjacent to the Chapadão mine, and at Cubatão, near the port of Santos in the state of São Paulo.
The phosphate fertilisers we produce enhance the natural structure and nutrients of soil, significantly improving crop yields and turning previously barren earth into fertile farmland.
And in Brazil, this product isn’t only powering agricultural progress and supporting the appetite of a nation, it is also helping increase the country's exports of fresh fruit, vegetables and grain crops.
For families all over the world, phosphates help put affordable, nutritious food on the table - now and for generations to come.
Isn’t that something to celebrate this World Food Day?
