Our work with children
A recent donation from our Moranbah North and Grosvenor mines has meant that the Simply Sunshine Childcare Centre - one of just two child care centres in Moranbah – has been able to perform a major upgrade of its facilities.
Simply Sunshine is one of just two child care centres in Moranbah – located in Queensland, Australia – and caters for more than 100 children up to the age of five. In a huge boost for Moranbah families, the infrastructure upgrade included a full renovation of the outdoor play area including new turf, paving, gardens, decking, educational equipment, a drainage system to prevent flooding and playground equipment.
Moranbah North General Manager, Craig Manz, said that Anglo American was proud to support the project, which had significantly improved education and childcare services in Moranbah.
Providing a safe, stimulating and colourful environment for younger children is crucial for their development. But what about older children and teenagers? How can we ensure they are able to access education freely?
The key is technology.
That’s why our Greenside Collliery has donated 12 interactive smartboards for maths and science subjects to six eMalahleni secondary schools in Witbank, South Africa.
The official handover of the e-learning system to the eMalahleni Department of Education took place in October at Patriot High School in Witbank.
Phase one of the project has already begun: Each school has received two boards, one dedicated to maths and the other for instruction in science-related topics. Phase two, scheduled to begin in 2016, will involve the linking of all schools via the internet, making it possible for a single teacher to simultaneously teach pupils in six different classrooms within a radius of 50 kilometres.
