10 October 2024 marks World Mental Health Day, with this year’s theme focusing on ‘Prioritising Mental Health in the Workplace’. This theme, chosen by a global vote open to the public, including World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH) members, stakeholders and supporters, provides employees, employers, businesses and organisations, with an opportunity to rekindle their efforts to promote and protect mental well-being at work.
At Anglo American our Purpose is to re-imagine mining to improve people’s lives. That includes improving the wellbeing of everyone who works for Anglo American, so we can all thrive. We know that mental wellness can be impacted by our working environment as well as our external environment and individual circumstances. As an organisation we have a critical part to play in seeing mental wellness as a shared responsibility. We can help do this by creating an inclusive environment where everyone can bring their whole and best selves to work and have the opportunity to fulfil their potential.
What are we doing to support mental wellness?
Our WeCare programme brings together four connected dimensions that enable us to look after our whole selves, so we can live longer, healthier and more fulfilled lives. These dimensions cover physical, mental and financial wellbeing as well as building meaningful social connections.
Dr Robina McCann, Head of Health, says “We all have mental health. Our role as a company is to ensure that individuals have easy access to the support they need to manage their own unique mental health needs. While we make as many resources as possible available on-line to all colleagues, we want everyone to know that they can reach out to their HR partners, their line managers, or members of the health teams, at any time, for guidance or support in managing their mental health and wellbeing.”
