Health
Collaborating with government departments and social partners, we promote healthcare to the broader community. Our work involves strengthening health systems through infrastructure, development, capacity building and programme support.
In 2018, we established a strategic partnership with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine to conduct a global baseline assessment and gap analysis across all our operations. The work was aligned with our 2030 targets and achieved through working with local partners. By 2020 we aim to have established a baseline, identified priorities and developed strategic partnerships and implementation plans at every site.
In Chile, we created a new pilot project with the Chilean national institute for nutrition to improve health habits and reduce childhood obesity through an educational intervention at a rural elementary state school. The one-year project will be funded through the Anglo American programme, Ambassadors for Good.
Education
We seek to empower our communities and support sustainable job creation through education and youth workforce development programmes that help provide young people to build the necessary skills to become successful.
We are very excited about our South Africa Education Programme. In partnership with the Department of Basic Education, the programme is aimed at students in 100 early-childhood-development sites and 100 schools close to our operations. The programme will improve reading, writing and numeracy by addressing the underlying causes of poor educational outcomes. The programme seeks to do this by supporting school management teams, governing bodies, principals and teaching staff. It is being implemented over five years from 2018-2022.
Meanwhile, in Chile, through our innovative technical education programme, Soy Tecnico, we seek to improve teaching practises at secondary schools. We currently support 12 schools, training 421 students.
Enterprise development
Our enterprise programmes are designed to foster the potential of host-community-based entrepreneurs through business mentorship and access to capital. By focusing on developing capacity, we help to establish resilient host-community businesses outside the mining value chain that will not be dependent on support from Anglo American over the long term.
Adelante, our three-year programme to build a talent pipeline in southern Peru, helps young people gain market-relevant post-secondary technical education through coordinated efforts between the region’s economic sector, public education systems and post-secondary technical institutes.
Forging ahead
Through these programmes, we can give back to our host communities. We will continue to work together with local government and community leaders to contribute to community needs and achieve the health targets in the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. The time is now to build on the progress we made in 2018 and accomplish our goals.
